Sarasota is a city of people who love the outdoors. Whether you’re seeking to swim and sun atop the rooftop pool at BLVD Sarasota, or hoping to get some sun and shopping in at Lido Key, nearly any spot that you choose to enjoy within Sarasota is the perfect spot to soak up the sunshine. Check out some of our favorites below.

Siesta Key Beach

While Siesta Key boasts three beaches that are open to the public, it’s the main Siesta Key Beach that garners the most attention. It’s remained a staple in Sarasota for years for a reason – it’s powder white sand, and turquoise waters are what dreams are made of. No wonder Dr. Stephen Leatherman, aka Dr. Beach, has rated it the number one more than once on his annual list of Top 10 Beaches in America.

Lido Key’s City Island

City Island serves as the ultimate staycation destination for the residents of Sarasota. It’s home to the expansive Mote Marine Laboratory Aquarium and the Ski-A-Rees water ski show, but the big attraction is the beach. Here, you can take out the boat and enjoy swimming and sunning the day away.

Beer Can Island

Out of all that Sarasota has to offer, Beer Can Island can be considered the locals’ best-kept secret. As a natural extension from Lido Key, Beer Can Island has gentle waves and warm waters to swim in, and a whole island to explore.

Lido Beach

Those who head to Lido Key’s main beach are enveloped in an energetic environment, full of people and activities, including yoga classes and play areas. When you’re done enjoying the beach, visit St. Armand’s Circle just nearby to enjoy the luxury shopping and dining.

Rooftop Pool at BLVD Sarasota

Sitting atop 18 stories in the heart of the new downtown, the rooftop pool at BLVD Sarasota offers residents and guests a place to relax and unwind – with fantastic views of the Sarasota Bay and the city below. Complete with an outdoor kitchen, cabana spaces, and fire pits, the pool will create the ultimate experience for residents and guests.

Here in Sarasota, history co-exists side by side with modern-day buildings and technologies. More than just eye-catching landmarks, these historical buildings and parks are noted for having had an important role in Sarasota’s past. Check out what you can learn at these amazing places…

Ca’ D’Zan

John Ringling was the owner of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus that dominated the cultural sphere in the early 20th century, especially in Sarasota. His wife, Mable, curated the iconic imagery that makes up the galleries of the Ringling museum network. Partially because John would have his performers spend winters in Florida, partially because the Ringlings were so charmed by Sarasota’s nature and warm weather, they decided to make the town their permanent home by building a mansion unrivalled in beauty and architecture. With John’s funds and Mable’s eye for art and design, they built Ca’ D’Zan, a monument to the circus that afforded them their lifestyle and the aesthetics that they loved. Today, Ca’ D’Zan is a gathering place for all kinds, where galas are held, speaker sessions are attended and audiences of all kinds marvel at the mansion’s beauty.

Sarasota Classic Car Museum

There’s a certain level of depth that one must appreciate when attending the Sarasota Classic Car Museum. On one level, it is a comprehensive collection of automobiles, ranging from the 1908 Rambler to the 2010 Spyker C8 Laviolette. It also serves as a social center, where musicians play live to audiences at special events. And it’s not just the cars that make this museum so valuable – it’s also a symbol of Sarasota’s economic strength. From its inception in 1953, the Sarasota Classic Car Museum was one of Sarasota’s most popular museums. While a lofty designation, this fact is especially important for the museum’s role in Sarasota’s ‘museum boom’. In the 50s, the town was full of museums, hoping to draw in tourists from across the nation. While many came and went, the Sarasota Classic Car Museum outlasted them with its service and dedication to history.

Crocker Memorial Church

Crocker Memorial Church stands as a testament to one man’s determination in bringing a church to Sarasota. In 1903, a Civil War veteran named Peter Crocker finished construction on the church that he hoped to bring to the residents of Sarasota. Today, the Crocker Memorial Church is a perfect example of turn-of-the-century cracker architecture. When attending one of the many shows and musicals held within its walls, observe the frame made from wood, its simple construction, and the additions made by the Bay Haven Baptist Church when they took over the building in 1926.

Historic Spanish Point

There really isn’t anything like Historic Spanish Point. Described as an outdoor archaeological and historic museum, the park’s location encompasses physical landmarks of Sarasota’s history. Attend a tour that showcases the ways that the Native Americans of the area lived, and even see some of their landmarks. Walkthrough the buildings of early settlers and learn how people such as John and Eliza Webb braved the untamed land of Early Florida to establish a homestead, and later forward Sarasota’s development. Even the plants here helped affect the flow of history, from providing food and shelter to directing the flow and purification of water, as attendees will learn on the plant tour.

Sarasota Jungle Gardens

Only minutes from downtown Sarasota and BLVD Sarasota, the Sarasota Jungle Gardens are one of the easiest ways for locals to access area history. As a relic of Sarasota’s tourism boom from the 40’s to the 50’s, the Sarasota Jungle Gardens combines an older approach with a modern touch. As the name indicates, the gardens showcase exotic animals from across the world alongside tropical flora of all kinds. Having animals wasn’t in the original plans of David Breed Lindsay and Pearson Conrad when they first began work on the gardens in the ‘30s. They had envisioned the landscape to be more of a botanical garden. However, as the attraction changed hands, its offerings changed as well. Tourists were amazed – not only could they witness the gardens’ famous flamingoes, they could also see species of plant life that they never saw before, such as strangler fig vines and Florida’s famed bald cypress trees.

Many of these amazing locations have shaped Sarasota’s culture through time. Be a part of Sarasota’s history with BLVD Sarasota, the luxury tower coming to downtown Sarasota.

Forbes Magazine has recently recognized Sarasota on its list of ‘The Best Places To Retire In 2019’. The magazine itself cited the area’s sunny weather and walkability, along with its fantastic culture and creativity. From its great shopping, dining, and outdoor entertainment, to its intertwined history with one of America’s most renowned circuses, Sarasota stands out.

Check out what Forbes had to say about Sarasota below:

The Best Places to Retire In 2019

Even for the we’ll-do-it-our-way Baby Boom generation, retirement usually means two predictable changes: less income and more freedom to live where you please. That’s why so many folks at least consider moving in retirement and why Forbes’ list of The Best Places To Retire In 2019 highlights 25 locales that offer both affordability and a high quality of life.

Our new roster, our ninth annual such list, contains places in 17 states across all four continental time zones. While they vary dramatically by size, climate and culture, all offer excellent retirement value for the buck. The list is in alphabetical order, meaning we consider all equally worthy

The List:

We compiled our list of the Best Places To Retire In 2019 by amassing and comparing data on nearly 700 places across all 50 states. We sought affordable places (as measured by median home price, cost of living and state taxes) with a high quality of retirement living and populations of 10,000 or more, either in the specific locality or a metro area. We also looked for places with good economic prospects, since that translates into opportunities for retirees who want to work part-time and more likely home price appreciation, should you decide to move again down the road.

When it came to judging quality of life, we considered a range of factors, including doctor availability, serious crime, air quality, walkability, and bike-ability, as well as a community’s ranking on the Milken Institute list of best cities for successful aging. Since this is a retirement list, we ignored data on local school districts. But the presence of colleges was considered a plus, as it tends to mean more cultural and other amenities are available at a reasonable price.

With so much shopping, dining, and entertainment going on within the city, it’s clear that Sarasota is a pretty special place. BLVD Sarasota, a 49-residence luxury condominium project is in the heart of it all, located on the southeast corner of Boulevard of the Arts and Tamiami Trail. Now officially topped off, it has brought an exciting energy to the city’s vibrant downtown arts district that Sarasota has never seen before, with the new Bay and Quay projects right around the corner.

Set amidst a tropical paradise, St. Armands is an enchanting circle of fine shops and gourmet restaurants. Renowned as a market place with a continental flavor, it is a charming and graceful synthesis of past and present.

Lush tropical plantings, and contemporary architectural design skillfully contribute to an international atmosphere of friendly warmth and timeless style. Relax in the restaurants, explore the shops – from trinkets to treasures, gourmet snacks to candlelight feasts, you’ll find it all on St. Armands Circle.

However, becoming the thriving cultural destination it is today did not come without struggle. Here are a few little known facts about the history of St. Armand’s Circle:

• In 1893, Charles St. Amand, A Frenchman and first resident of the island, purchased for $21.71 three tracts of land totaling 131.89 acres. In later land deeds, his name was misspelled “St. Armand” and this spelling has persisted to the present day.

• Visionary circus magnate John Ringling purchased the St. Armands Key property in 1917 and planned a development which included residential lots and a shopping center laid out in a circle. As no bridge to the key had yet been built, Ringling engaged an old paddle-wheel steamboat, the “Success,” to service as a work boat. Circus elephants were used to haul the huge timbers from which the bridge and causeway were built.

• One year later, amid much pomp and ceremony, both the John Ringling Causeway and Ringling Estates development opened to the public, with John Ringling himself leading a parade across the causeway and his Circus Band playing from a bandstand in the center of the Circle.

• As the nationwide depression worsened, land sales in Florida and on St. Armands stopped completely. In 1928, the City of Sarasota accepted the causeway as a gift, which Ringling himself could no longer afford to maintain. Gradually, the wooden causeway began to rot, the Circle bandstand sagged, and the native vegetation covered the carefully planned streets and sidewalks.

• During the 1940’s, several courageous investors opened restaurants and a service station on the Circle but not until 1953 did business once again resume on St. Armands. By 1955 a number of stores had opened.

• Today, more than 130 stores on St. Armands Circle pamper customers from all areas of the United States and many foreign countries.

The St. Armands Circle experience is indeed a memorable one. Explore and enjoy a day of European style shopping with a gourmet lunch in a cozy cafe. Those who admire St. Armands sophisticated style and luxury will also notice that there is a new addition to that tradition of Sarasota excellence. Just a short drive from St. Armands Circle, in the heart of the Rosemary District, is
